Definition; 

is an expert who manages a communications network within an organization. A network administrator must have a high level of technological knowledge and is most commonly the highest level of technical staff within a given organization.

Roles                                       

  • Ensuring the network is secure.
  • Distributing software upgrades
  • Monitoring daily activity on the network.
  • Enforces licensing agreements.
  • Developing a programmer to manage storage
  • Provides for routine backups.
  • Installing, maintaining and upgrading any software or hardware required to   efficiently run a computer network.
  • Analyze and isolate network issues.
  • Assign routine protocols and table configurations.
  • Perform network address assignments
  • Server deployment and security.
  • Design and deploy network.

A network designer has to create the network design. This task is not performed by new network administrators but by senior network architects who are experienced and are familiar with both network software and hardware.

The network created has to suit the organization

Setting up the network; 

This role involves installing hardware that makes up the physical part of the network. Configuring the files or databases, hosts, routers and network configuration servers

Maintaining the network; 

It involves, adding new hosts to the network and administering network security which is important in safeguarding the organizations’ files and databases. Maintaining the network also entails administering network services such as name and electronic mail and troubleshooting networking problem when it arises.

  • USA; Network administrators in the US are largely men earning an average of $ 55,000 annually. Incomes of network administrators in the US vary widely depending on performance components; bonuses and profit sharing that can occasionally exceed $5000 paychecks to spread between $36,000 on the low end and $77,000 on the high end.
  • AUSTRALIA; The average salary of a network administrator per year in Australia is AU$ 62,519.Most people move on to other jobs if they have more than 20 years of experience.

 

  • SOUTH AFRICA; The average salary is 180,157 Rand per year. Highest paying skills associated with this job are Cisco networking, Microsoft active directory, Microsoft exchange and Windows NT/2000/XP networks. People in this job generally don’t have more than 20 years of experience
