The name of the game seems to have changed in the desktop processor world. It’s no longer about how many megahertz; there is now more emphasis on the number of cores. In light of the shift, Intel, one the leaders in processor technology, has released its first desktop CPU with a staggering 10 cores. The Core i7-6950X Extreme edition was announced at Computex today. (There have been 10-core Xeon CPUs for servers from 2011.)

This latest processor will operate at 3GHz, with the ability to be boosted up to 3.5GHz. It will be endowed with a 25MB cache and will be enhanced by Turbo Boost 3.0, one of Intel’s new technologies.

However, buyers should be ready to fork out a hefty buck for the processor. If you dream of owning it, you should be prepared to part with $1,723.

Now you might be wondering what you can possibly gain from this. According to claims made by intel, the processor is about 100% faster than the quad-core i7 6700K as far as 3D rendering is concerned. The processor is also 35% better than the latest-gen Core i7-5960X.

Editing 4k video is a piece of cake for the new 10-core beast. It can do the job 65 percent faster than the same type of chip but quad core. The previous i7 performs the same task 25 percent slower than the new one.

In the gaming arena, it can perform at speeds 25 percent higher than the 5960X for 4K gaming, and at the same time encode and broadcast a 1080p Twitch stream.

Intel Announces a 10 core desktop CPU

In a nutshell, if you have huge amounts of daily content to handle, this could be the best CPU for you.

The newly released Extreme Edition of i7 processors can be acquired in three different versions: an 8-core version which will be costing 1089 dollars; 6 core types, which will go for 617 dollars; and i7-6800K, going for 434 dollars. They usually don’t need any unlocking, and so you’re able to do as much overclocking as you desire. The new chips all accommodate DDR4-2400 RAM, which is a little improvement from the last generation of processors.

While the price is high, chances are you’ll be fine if these are really for you, if you really need powerful performance. The new processor gives Intel the upper hand over AMD, whose best so far only has 8 cores. However, AMD’s processors are much cheaper than all of Intel’s.
