With hacking emerging as the new profession for many computer geeks, and the field making great advancements, even very secure web sites are not free from the shrewd hacking skills of newly emerging cyber criminals. Well known web site Lenovo.com has been made a victim of cyber crime. The hacking of the site processed in a way that was something like this: At 4PM EST, people visiting the site started seeing a display of disaffected teenagers which was played against the song ‘Breaking Free’ from Hollywood movie High School Musical. At 4:17, the web site seemed to have gone back to its normal functioning self, even though HTML problems remained and in some cases, the song kept playing in the backdrop. Now, the hacked edition of the website resurfaces irregularly as cached editions continue to work throughout the system. However by 5:30pm, the web site looked like it had again become normal.

When the cyber criminals behind this hack were investigated, a lot of sources came up. One particular source for the hacked web page recognized it as, ‘the fresh and enhanced renovated Lenovo web site introducing Rory Andrew Godfrey and Ryan King.’ This increased the pace of the investigation as both the names taken were renowned in the field of cyber crime. Both Rory Andrew Godfrey and Ryan King have been openly recognized as associates of the cyber criminal collective gang Lizard Squad. However, the association of Lizard Squad with this particular hack is not clear. It remains uncertain whether Rory Andrew Godfrey or Ryan King are actually individually connected to the cyber crime, or if the hackers are merely using their pictures and names to hide their actual identity.

Incidentally, The attack happened just when the company was on the front of facing mass disapproval. It had introduced new computers which contained an secret code hacking line up known as ‘Super fish.’ After facing public criticism for this, Lenovo ultimately introduced a program to get rid of the software and reinstate the people who had been affected by its use, but the disaster caused many customers to suffer and be disappointed by the company. The hacking attack could be attributed to this very perpetual mistrust between Lenovo and its users.

The cyber criminals seem to have attacked Lenovo’s domain archive – which makes this hack very  dangerous. This would have them get control of the lenovo.com URL. By their control of this URL, they would now have that would the authority to transmit the lenovo.com URL to a new server – which would also be under the hackers’ control. The hack aims at the company’s exterior infrastructure, which can be found similar to the attacks of the Syrian Electronic Army against Twitter and The New York Times in early 2013. As a effect, there is no motive to believe that the cyber criminals have violated Lenovo’s interior network. Still, it is an discomforting event for the company, particularly due to the safety concerns regarding Super fish.
